Effective Publisher: Unit Labs
What this covers
DailyReport is a news app for Android, published by Unit Labs on Google Play, with a site at dailyreport.observer. This page explains what the app and that site use, and why. It adds detail to the Unit Labs privacy notice. Where the two differ for DailyReport, this page applies. The same notice is also published on the DailyReport site.
Summary
- A bite is a short report of other outlets' stories. The trust score describes the story, not you.
- Sign-in with Google is optional. You can read without an account.
- If you sign in, we keep the identifiers Google shares and the preferences you set.
- The free app may show ads from Google. Plus removes them.
- Google Play handles Plus. Unit Labs never sees your card number.
- We do not sell personal information.
Account
If you sign in with Google, Google shares an account identifier, your email address, and your name if your Google account provides one. We use that to recognize you, keep Plus tied to you, and sync the preferences below. Sign-in is optional. Google's handling of the sign-in is covered by the Google privacy policy.
What you read
To build the feed you asked for, we store the edition you pick, language, topic switches, articles you save or like, stories you dismiss, and any custom feeds you add. If you are signed in, those preferences are kept for your account so they can follow you to another install. If you are not signed in, they stay on the phone.
Device and logs
We receive ordinary technical data needed to run and protect the service: device type, operating system version, app version, and the IP address that reaches the host. Server logs are kept on a short rotation. We do not use this to build an advertising profile of our own.
Notifications
If you turn on notifications, the phone supplies a push token so we can send the digest or topic alerts you opted into. You can turn notifications off in the app or in Android settings. The token is dropped when you unregister or uninstall.
Plus
Plus is an optional subscription processed by Google Play. Google handles the payment and your payment details under its own policy. We receive the subscription status we need to unlock Plus. We do not receive or store your card number. Canceling is done in the store. See Refunds.
Ads
On the free tier, Google may show ads and process an advertising identifier, approximate location, and ad interactions, subject to the consent choices presented in the app. Plus removes those ads. Where a US state law treats personalized advertising as a "share" of personal information, use the privacy choices page and the controls on your device.
How a bite is written
Editors decide what is published. Automated tools may help draft a bite from a headline and an excerpt. That processing is about the article, not about your account, and it is not used to train a model on your personal data in the ordinary course of reading.
Legal bases
Where the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies, we rely on one or more of these bases: contract, to deliver the app and the account features you ask for; consent, for optional notifications, certain ads, and any marketing; legitimate interests, for security, keeping the service reliable, and understanding failures, balanced against your rights; and legal obligation, where a law requires us to keep or disclose information. You can withdraw consent without affecting processing that was already lawful.
Who else receives data
Google receives sign-in data, Play purchase data, the push token if you enable notifications, and advertising data on the free tier. Google acts under its own policies for that data. The host that runs the DailyReport service processes account and preference data on our instructions. We do not sell personal information, and we do not pass your reading history to data brokers. We can disclose information we hold if the law requires it, to protect rights and safety, or as part of a merger or sale of the product, with notice where the law requires notice.
International transfers
Unit Labs is established in India. The app is offered in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, and people in the EEA may use it. Providers, including Google, may process data in India, the United States, the EEA, or other countries. Where the law requires a safeguard for a transfer, we use one, such as standard contractual clauses or the provider's transfer terms.
United States
If a US state privacy law applies to you, the categories we handle are identifiers (such as an email from Google sign-in), commercial information (Plus status, not your card number), internet or network activity (stories you save, like, or dismiss, and topic switches), and approximate technical data such as device type and IP address in logs. We do not sell personal information for money. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising of our own. Google's ads on the free tier can be a "share" under some state laws when you allow personalized ads. You can opt out on the choices page.
You can ask us to know, correct, or delete personal information, to opt out of sale or sharing, and to limit use of sensitive information. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a right. If we deny a request, you can appeal by replying to that email. An authorized agent may write for you if they show they are authorized.
Topic switches are preferences you set. We do not use them to infer your health, your racial or ethnic origin, or your political opinions for advertising.
EEA, UK, and similar laws
If you are in the EEA, the UK, or a country with similar rights, you can ask to access, correct, or erase personal data, to restrict or object to certain processing, to receive data you provided in a portable form, and to withdraw consent. You can complain to the supervisory authority where you live. We have not appointed a separate representative in the EEA or the UK. Write to support@unitlabs.in and we will handle the request.
The trust score and the topic ranking do not make a decision about you that has a legal effect or a similarly significant effect. They describe stories and the order of a feed.
If you are in Canada or Australia, you can ask for access to, and correction of, personal information we hold, under the privacy law that applies where you live. Use the same email.
Children
DailyReport is not directed at children under 13, or under 16 in the EEA and the UK. We do not knowingly collect personal information from those children. If you believe a child has provided data or emailed us, write to us and we will delete it.
Keeping and deleting
We keep account and preference data while the account is in use, and afterwards only as long as we need it for backups, disputes, or a legal duty. Push tokens are removed when you turn notifications off or uninstall. When you ask us to delete, we delete or de-identify personal data within 30 days of a verified request, unless the law requires us to keep it. The steps are on the deletion page. Google can keep Play and sign-in records under its own policies.
Changes
We may update this page. The date at the top changes when we do. A material change will be noted on this page or in the app.
